SavageRun anchovy heads are designed for anglers who use whole anchovies or similar baits when trolling.
Anchovies are often smaller than the cut baits used in some meat rigs, providing a different, more natural presentation much appreciated by many experienced anglers. Where access to anchovies is possible, this approach remains a trusted and proven option on the water.
Anchovy heads can be used in a variety of rigs. Popular approaches include use with a tandem fly behind an attractor, or directly behind an attractor on a leader. These presentations create a natural action different from spoons, flies or cut baits.
They can also be used with certain soft lures, commonly called rubbers by anglers, a very popular approach to varying the action, profile and presence of the rig.
Leader length and attractor size vary according to the angler’s style, conditions and desired presentation. As a rule of thumb, many anglers position the anchovy head about 6 feet behind the attractor. A shorter distance may be preferable behind an attractor smaller than 8.5 inches, especially for lighter presentations.
This presentation is often used lower in the water column, usually around 80 feet and deeper, but you shouldn’t restrict yourself to it. Depending on the time of season, weather conditions, light conditions and fish behaviour during the day, an anchovy head can also produce excellent results higher in the water column.
Experienced anglers know that a variety of trustworthy lures and presentations help keep catches consistent. With this in mind, anchovy heads are a weapon not to be overlooked in the arsenal of a Great Lakes salmon and salmonid angler.
